Berliner Schaufenster – Performing Arts for the Very Young

Oct 7 – Nov 19 2023

Since 2016, Theater o.N. has been presenting the festival "Berliner Schaufenster" every two years for audiences aged 0-7 and promotes exchange and networking among the artists and producers. In 2023, Theater o.N. is cooperating with Schaubude Berlin and FELD Theater für junges Publikum to direct public focus in Berlin on dance and theater for the youngest audience.

The goal of the Berliner Schaufenster is to provide the quarter million daycare children in Berlin with high-quality theater experiences and to contribute to equal cultural participation.

A part of the selected productions uses little or no language and is therefore also suitable for people without German language skills.

About one third of the performances are held as so-called "relaxed performances".

We want all people to feel welcome at the Berliner Schaufenster - even those who are often told that they are "too loud" or "too restless". For certain performances at the Berliner Schaufenster we would like to explicitly invite all people who feel more comfortable in an inclusive atmosphere.

We create information sheets for the productions, which contain precise information about the play and the theatrical means used in it (such as bright lights or loud music), about the venue and the sequence of events, so that visitors can decide whether the performance is suitable for them.

In 2023, for the first time, a children's jury will also be involved in the project, visit the juried productions and present awards in different categories.

As part of a writer's workshop, a group of emerging cultural journalists will accompany the festival accompanied by an experienced colleague in writing and editing performance reviews. The texts will be collected in a festival blog.

Creating exchange opportunities for artists and organizers of children's and youth theater

Is an important aspect of the festival. Two events invite theater makers and other interested parties - not only from the field of children's and youth theater - to exchange ideas on the topics of "Creating Access" and "Sustainability as an Aesthetic Concept". Both events will be held in German and interpreted into German sign language.

October 7, 4:30-6:00 p.m. - FELD Theater for Young Audiences.

Let's talk about... Access
How can theaters create access for people with disabilities and impairments? How can working on access expand the arts, performance practice, as well as performance attendance? The production OHREN SEHEN by Lea Moro on the same day at 3 p.m. offers those interested an introduction into the topic. The event will conclude with a get-together in conversation on the café terrace.

Puppets for Future: sustainability and young audiences

"Puppets for Future" regularly invites to networking and exchange around the topic of sustainability. In the context of the Berliner Schaufenster, the event focuses on the question of how sustainability can be addressed on stage in children's theater. Artists are invited to share and discuss their aesthetic approaches and ideas. What experiences have theater makers had in contact with young audiences, and what challenges and opportunities have arisen?
